Why are some pigeons 'homers'?

Saturday, June 23, 20120 comments

One the birds have a kind of built-in compass at the ends of the nerves in their eyes. This magnetic sense enables them to follow the earth's magnetism. Test have shown that a blind pigeon has no sense of direction. But no creature has stronger homing instinct than a pigeon. It has been proved that a pigeon, released on the shores of the Mediterranean, is able to find its way home to a loft in England. It is thought it is able to do this by finding the electrical disturbances caused by its flight though the earth's magnetic field. At various heights there are apparently 'magnetic lanes'. The pigeons in some way select the one they know will lead them home. most animals have a homing instinct of some kind; even limpets have been known to return to teir home on a rock when removed from it as far away as 4 feat(1.2 meter)
